70/365

last week the teacher
talked to us about gender:
identity
expression
stereotypes
norms and roles.

this week
he showed up with
black nail polish
and mentioned that
we all need role models
if we want to feel free to
express our true selves.

“‘i’ve always liked the look
of painted nails and eye liner too,
but felt that being a teacher
didn’t allow me to feel comfortable
with polish—
that it would be frowned upon.
but if i am encouraging
you not to be afraid of breaking stereotypes and norms
and being your true selves,
then i shouldn’t be afraid either,” he said.

we all wondered what he might do next week
as we left the classroom.
