122/365

start with a
crisp cucumber
cut into thirds and then speared,
and lathered with rock salt crystals
and a fine sprinkle of black pepper corns.
sparkling water poured
over cubes of ice
in a clear plastic glass
on a small wooden table
in front the patio doors
where the basil flowers
are blooming indiscriminately and
for reasons you don’t understand,
and the aubergine seems to be
thriving even though it’s
rooted in a pot that’s
already too small,
and you know it needs to be changed,
but you don’t know when you’ll get to it,
because if you really cared you’d have
already done something about it,
but you most likely won’t.
you’re already watering it
to keep it alive, doesn’t that seem
like more than enough,
but when it dies you’ll sit with the regret
for not doing more when you
knew you should have.

doing the thing
that needs to be done
when it needs to be done
seems like a lesson
you should
have learned
by now.
