putting the
washed sheets
on the bed
in a storm
while listening
to stories of
survival and optimism
on a podcast from kenya.
trying to shake
this funk because
a friend sent a
concerned message
about how these poems
all sound worrisome
and empty and sad,
trying to find a small
win with the small win.
driving to get a haircut
and schmoozing with
the barber and later with a friend
over for greek food and cocktails
and a mellow pinot noir.
sitting with disfunction
past. present and future.
the girl in the podcast
spoke of finding a baby
in the trash and of the
hole that was left in her
tender heart after it died,
and here you are wondering
why smiles are hard to find
when you’re on holiday
procrastinating on the
self-improvement projects.
