Thaipusam

I have been away for a while. Plagued by a crippling writer’s block that spiraled into a nihilistic worldview, I was forced to leave Intrepid Flame flickering low for a few weeks. Caught up in the satisfaction of teaching and fatherhood, I felt that maybe I didn’t have enough to grumble about, and writing about how great everything is can be difficult to swallow for some.

But enough is enough. While the writing is still coming slowly, I have a few photos I would like to share. I am in the process of finding new ways to share photos. I am probably the last person on earth to start using Flickr, but I hope to be up and running on that platform soon. In the meantime, I am using Bliptv to post slideshows and video I am creating with my amazing Mac programs.

Living in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes be a bit dull. It usually feels like a very nice US city. Thank you globalization! The mall culture here is overpowering, and there is really very little to do that doesn’t somehow involve air conditioning or commerce. But every once in a while, I am reminded that I live in a dynamic, diverse and beautiful place. This last Thursday was the annual Thaipusam festival here in Kuala Lumpur. I had gone to this festival a few years ago, but I wanted to take my mom and test out my new camera. I knew that it would be a photo bonanza. I was not let down.

I apologize for not having any text to go with this slideshow, but the writer’s block is still lingering like a bad cold. This explanation alone has been taxing. I wish I could write some kind of profound account of what it feels like to attend a festival like this- to see all the colors, to mix with the 500,000 plus people, to walk through all the trash, to eat amazing Indian food on banana leaves, but I am not up for it right now. Enjoy the images, (Remember to let the video fully load to avoid frustration) and if you are still out there and reading. Thanks.

  1. To blog you don't need to write a book. Just write an idea to talk about.

I can't believe I missed Thaipusam AGAIN. Last year I totaly forgot, this year I was just too sick to make it. What a dissapointment. Thanks for posting the pictures - I will now pretend I went ;)

  3. I wouldn't worry about your "blogger's block". Nothing significant in human history has ever been accomplished in January. It's the lamest, least inspiring month there is. Except of course for Smarch.
