Bleary Eyed and Reckless

It’s twelve ten and any sane person would be in bed sleeping, but I’m here instead. Cowboy Junkies’ Sweet Jane is on Spotify and the glow of the screen is the only light in the room.

Spent the day teaching bleary eyed and reckless. I was running on fumes all day, but somehow squeezed in a dreary and difficult 6KM after school. Trying get myself back on track. I needed some catch up time with media so I watched the Beyonce video Formation and loved it. It feels like a sister to Alright by Kendrick Lamar. Made me think of this tweet:

“I’m usually a pretty big fan of anything that makes white people uncomfortable, especially when that white person is me.”

Made me think about how scared and nervous I was as we got caught in stand still traffic leaving Nairobi the other night. There is something I love so deeply about Black culture, but there is so much of it I don’t understand which confuses me. I’m pretty sure that it is in this confusion and misunderstanding that racism is born. Me in the other hand, I like to dwell in the confusion and explore and see what I discover about myself, but I think most people just beome afraid and their fear leads to hate.

Just got back from seeing The Revenant. Wow! Beautifully shot. Didn’t realise the human body could take so much abuse. There was some things that were unbelievable, but I suspended my belief and sat on the edge of my seat.

I needed a movie, a dark room, some popcorn and a coke before I can even begin to think about the report card comments I need to start writing starting tomorrow.
Tomorrow morning is crazy, so excuse another short post. The bed beckons and the eyes need rest.

  1. Loved this. A break from writing in my notebook about fear and silence.
